What Google access Duality needs, and why
Two read-only permissions, one in Search Console and one in Google Analytics. You never share a password, and you can remove either one in a few clicks. You can send this page to whoever manages your website.
The whole ask
Duality has one Google service account: a robot account with its own email address, not a person and not your login. The setup page shows the address with a Copy button. You add it as a user on your own property, the same way you would add a colleague.
- Google Search Console: add the address with the Restricted permission, the lowest Search Console offers. It can see your figures. It cannot change settings or users.
- Google Analytics 4: add the address with the Viewer role, the read-only one, and give us your Property ID (nine or ten digits).
Rankings and PageSpeed scores need no access. Nothing is added to your website, and there is no tracking code.
What we can see, and what we can't
- We read totals for a finished week or month: clicks and impressions from Search Console, and sessions, new and returning users, engagement rate, bounce rate and average session time from Analytics.
- We can only reach the properties you add the address to. Your other Google properties, your account, email and Drive are out of reach.
- We cannot change your settings, delete data or add users, and we have no login to your Google account.
- Your report shows totals only: no individual visitors and no search terms.
How far back, and how often
Your first reports cover the last full week and the last full month. After that, each Monday we add the week that just finished (and re-read it on Wednesday, once Google's figures have settled), and on the 3rd we add the month that just closed. Setup also runs a few short checks over recent days to confirm the connection works and that the property belongs to your site, and the keyword suggestions are drawn from the searches your site recently appeared for. None of that goes into your report.
Connect Search Console
- Copy the address from the Search Console step in setup.
- Open Search Console users and permissions.
- Pick your property from the list at the top left.
- Click Add user, paste the address and set the permission to Restricted.
- Click Add, then press "I have added it, check now".
If we can see more than one of your properties, we ask which is yours. A "domain" property covers the whole site. A web address property covers only that exact version of it.
Connect Google Analytics 4
- Copy the address from the Analytics step in setup.
- Open Google Analytics and click Admin, bottom left.
- Under Property, choose Property access management.
- Click the blue +, then Add users. Paste the address and give it the Viewer role.
- Open Property settings, copy the Property ID and paste it into setup.
Use the Property ID, nine or ten digits. The Measurement ID that starts with G- is a different number and will not work.
If you get stuck
- "Add user" is greyed out. Only an owner or full user can add people in Search Console, and only an administrator can in Analytics. Ask whoever set the property up, or send them this page.
- We can't find your property. The address has to be added to the exact property you chose. Check you picked the same site and the same Analytics property you gave us.
- The report shows zeros. A new or quiet site can really have no clicks yet. If you are sure it has, check the Property ID and that the Viewer role was saved.
Remove access whenever you like
In Search Console, open Users and permissions and remove the Duality address. In Analytics, open Property access management and remove it there too. You don't need to ask us. Google figures stop arriving straight away because Google refuses the request. Rankings and speed scores carry on, and reports you already have stay as they are. Our Privacy Policy and Terms cover what happens to your data if you leave.
